I get interviewed

walling (01)

Most of the time I get to listen to interesting, wise folks speak insightfully about their family lives. I like that. I like to listen.

I few weeks ago, I was asked to do an interview about my family life. Role reversal- yikes!

I have been tempted to calmly pretend that there is no evidence of this conversation (suddenly feeling very shy). However, I realize that I can’t really go around asking other people to be vulnerable, if I’m not.

Bretch and Scott are a couple of dads who are in the process of building businesses. I hang out with folks like this because of my husband, Rob who is something of a start-up, entrepreneur guru. In this interview, Bretch, Scott and I talk about the ways that entrepreneurship and family intersect. We also talk a bit about homeschooling, my own career choices and I make reference so my love of shoes. It was fun to be part of this conversation. Thanks, Bretch and Scott!

Hey Sherry, I wanted to say thank you for this interview. Rob mentioned it on his podcast the other day, so I gave it a listen. I’m a business owner (from home, approaching two years and starting to stabilize a bit), and sometimes wonder how my wife and two young kids are being shaped by my decision to leave security and build a different life. So I originally listened to hear how you and your boys have responded to Rob’s choices, to help get a bit of a clue into my wife’s mind (who is a lot calmer on the outside than the inside).

But what really did it for me was when the conversation turned to homeschooling. I was homeschooled myself, in California in the 90s, when it wasn’t very popular. And I can see the fruit in both my life and my brother’s. But it was never something I really thought of for my own two, mostly because my wife has mentioned that she doesn’t feel up to the task. To hear you talk about how your traveling lifestyle (something that is important that I want to establish) almost requires it, and also to hear how Rob helps with the education, really made this seem possible for us. I love most of the subjects my wife doesn’t, and my own homeschooling background does assure me that it isn’t an 8-hour a day commitment. It is something we definitely could fit into our lifestyle, especially as it will allow greater freedom in the things that matter to us, like time and travel.

Our oldest enters Kindergarten on Monday, and I just brought this up with my wife. But I think it would be realistic for us to make this a reality by the time our youngest reaches school age in 2 years.

So, thank you for your vulnerability and for talking through this awesome topic of becoming a family of entrepreneurs. I loved this episode!

      Hi Barrett.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to the interview.

The entrepreneurial life has really worked well for our family and homeschooling fits into that. It is quite challenging- mostly because Rob and I are both working. But overall, we are glad we’re doing it.

You might like this interview. This family prepared their children for college-level work by the time each of their children had turned 12: http://www.parentingreimagined.org/episodes/episode-20-college-by-12/

Best of luck as you continue to create the right situation for your family!

      Cheers,
      Sherry

Awesome, thanks for passing that other interview on. I’ll give it a listen. My brother and I both started college at 14. I enlisted (got a bit sidetracked, lol), but my brother finished his Masters degree by 20. Keep up the work, it’s worth the challenge.
